Kitchen Islands

Rustic Kitchen Islands

This island is the one I built for my kitchen. I have a kitchen that has far less counterspace then I would prefer. So, I figured out how much space was being wasted in the middle of the kitchen floor, and how much I could take up with a island.

The kitchen island has become the most useful workspace in my kitchen. It can be a place to prepare food, and serve guests when they are here. It also provides some very useful storage space. This one has two large drawers, one on either end. A sturdy shelf is underneath where I store bins of storage containers and other cooking paraphernalia, as well as cases of drinks.

I put an epoxy coated surface on this to protect the wood top and provide a solid hardened surface that is less likely to get damaged. The rest of the island is painted with a chalk paint and polyurethane. Cast iron handles and decorations were added as a final touch, and useful as dish towel holders.
